Nicki Minaj had a bit of a chaotic weekend in Europe. She was arrested, she went live on Instagram, and she capped it off by saying that Princess Diana was a “dear friend.” Allow me to explain.

On Saturday, Minaj was arrested by Dutch police at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport while trying to fly to Manchester for the next stop on her Pink Friday 2 World Tour. In a video Minaj shared to Instagram, a man who she later claimed was the pilot tells her the police want to “search all her luggage.” Minaj also went live on Instagram and recorded the police as they told her she was under arrest for “carrying drugs.” The rapper asked for a lawyer several times in the video but eventually got into the police van and went to the police station.

In addition to sharing video of the arrest, Minaj posted on X throughout the ordeal, where she wrote that things (presumably the drugs) had been planted in her luggage and claimed this was a coordinated effort to “sabotage” her tour because of its success.

The rapper wrote that the cops had found weed in her bag in the form of pre-rolled joints and that her security guard had told police the joints belonged to him. Minaj seemed to be under the belief that all weed is legal in the Netherlands, which is not true. The drug is illegal but classified as a “soft drug,” meaning it’s less harmful than other drugs. While the recreational use of weed is tolerated in certain spaces, it’s illegal to try and fly to another country with the drug in your possession.

The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee (a.k.a. the Dutch national police) later confirmed in a post on X that they had released a 41-year-old American woman who had been arrested on “suspicion of exporting soft drugs.” They later confirmed to ABC News that the woman was Minaj. She was fined and allowed to continue on to the United Kingdom.

Once she arrived in Manchester, Minaj wrote a lengthy post in which she said that she had sat in a jail cell for “5-6 hours” before being released. She once again alluded to this being a coordinated effort to keep her from performing, writing, “They sure did know exactly how to hurt me today but this too, shall pass. They’ve been doing this over & over & over & over & over again & I’ve tried so hard to not discuss it b/c you guys deserve to just get the good stuff.” Minaj did not clarify  who “they” are.

Following her arrest, Minaj was forced to cancel her show in Manchester on Saturday night. “Despite Nicki’s best efforts to explore every possible avenue to make tonight’s show happen, the events of today have made it impossible,” the venue, Co-op Live, wrote in a statement. “We are deeply disappointed by the inconvenience this has caused.”

But the show must go on, and Minaj was back onstage in Birmingham on Sunday. She played all the hits, she interacted with the Barbz, and, of course, she asked for a moment of silence for her “dear friend” Princess Diana after one of her fans told her they were from Wales. You can arrest Nicki Minaj all you want, but that certainly won’t stop her from doing her thing.
