WRONGFUL DEATH BILL: The state legislatures passed the Grieving Families Act on Wednesday, which attempts to expand the types of damages people can obtain from wrongful death lawsuits. The bill would allow families to collect damages from the emotional impacts of losing a loved one, not just from the loss of their income. Medical groups including the Medical Society of the State of New York and the Healthcare Association of New York State opposed the passage of the bill, with the former group citing an uptick in liability medical malpractice costs. Gov. Kathy Hochul has vetoed the bill twice.
LONG-TERM CARE: VNS Health’s managed long-term care plan, which coordinates Medicaid services for older New Yorkers and people with disabilities, is set to absorb up to 350 members of Senior Network Health, a health plan affiliated with Mohawk Valley Hospital in Utica. The state Health Department approved a plan for all Senior Network Health members to enroll in VNS Health’s managed long-term care plan or transfer to another local plan once the organization ceases operations this month, VNS Health announced Wednesday.
