We’re Not Ready for Trump on TikTok

Following the guilty verdict at his hush-money trial, former president Donald Trump is busy reflecting on his choices and coming to terms with reality. Haha, just kidding — he’s sitting cageside at a UFC fight in New Jersey and joining TikTok. Four years after attempting to ban the app during his presidency, Trump is officially FYP-ready. He announced his social-media debut alongside UFC president Dana White after attending a huge MMA event Saturday night.

In his first video, which was filmed at the UFC match and chronicles the “thunderous applause” he received upon entry, Trump declares it “my honor” to suddenly be on TikTok, where as of Monday afternoon he already has 4.2 million followers. That’s millions more than Joe Biden, our other presidential candidate who is anti-TikTok but also has an account, ostensibly to reach younger voters. Both men have expressed concern about the app’s potential ties to the Chinese government, though Trump recently indicated on his social-media platform, Truth Social, that he’d changed his tune. As much as I value my cleanfluencer videos, this development has me wondering if maybe a ban is the right way to go?
