The Met Gala is on Monday, and in what sounds like a Project Runway–themed nightmare I’ve had before, Zendaya’s dress hasn’t even been made yet, according to Law Roach. To make your palms even sweatier, the Challengers star is hosting the event this year, so the pressure is really on for her to top her previous Met Gala looks.
“I haven’t seen Zendaya’s dress! We’ve been on two press tours — Dune 2 and Challengers — and doing two Vogue covers,” Roach, Zendaya’s longtime stylist, said in an interview with the New York Times published on Thursday. “The dress isn’t even made. They won’t fit until Saturday.”
Roach seems fairly chill about this situation, perhaps owing to the fact that his collaborations with Zendaya always seem to turn out well. Most recently, she served (pun intended) on every Challengers red carpet, and let’s not forget the archival Mugler moment she had at one of the Dune: Part Two premieres.
In the interview, Roach referred to Zendaya as his “fashion soul mate,” and gave a bit of insight into their relationship. “I come in with, ‘You should wear 14 dresses, and you should change, and you should have a wig on and take it off so your hair should fall down!’ And she’s, ‘No, no, no, no. We’re going to do two dresses, and I’m going to keep the same hair,’” he explained. “It’s like, I write the script, and she does the rewrites.”
We’ll see their final draft in a few days, when Zendaya arrives to the Met in what is hopefully a finished dress that fits properly. This year the theme is “The Garden of Time,” inspired by a J.G. Ballard poem that goes: “But with each passing hour, an angry mob slowly begins to encroach their home, with the only way to fend them off involving the count plucking the petals of a time-reversing flower.” Seems like a time-reversing flower might be exactly what Roach and Zendaya need right now.
