Gypsy Rose Blanchard is working on a memoir. The book, called My Time to Stand, is slated to hit shelves next January, just over a year after her release from prison. According to the synopsis, the book will address Blanchard’s difficult childhood as a victim of her mother’s abuse as well as her time in prison. “I am in love with the title of my book not only because it addresses the question I get most, but because in our pain and struggle we can find what it is that we want to stand for,” Blanchard told People in a statement. “Inside our stories, if we dare to sit in the stillness of them, our purpose can be revealed. And we all have a purpose. That’s what I hope people will take away from my book.”
Blanchard was sentenced to ten years in prison in 2016 after being convicted of second-degree murder for conspiring with her boyfriend at the time, Nicholas Godejohn, to kill her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard. During the trial, prosecutors argued that Dee Dee suffered from what is commonly known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy (the condition is now referred to in the DSM as factitious disorder imposed on another, or FDIA). Blanchard testified that she was forced to use a wheelchair and oxygen tank she didn’t need, and according to Today, she was treated for diseases she didn’t have with medically unnecessary surgeries and medications. She was homeschooled and raised mostly in isolation, BuzzFeed News reported. The story was the subject of Hulu’s The Act and the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest.
Since her release, Gypsy Rose has been busy, making headlines with relationship updates and her now-defunct TikTok presence. In January, BenBella Books published Released, a collection of interview transcripts, journal entries, illustrations, and photos created by or with Blanchard along with Melissa Moore and Michele Matrisciani. Moore and Matrisciani are co-authors of My Time to Stand, which will also be published by BenBella Books. “I hope to engage readers by describing my journey, instead of explaining it. In that way, others might see themselves in my story, too, and relate,” Blanchard told People.
