The Beauty Products Brooke DeVard Ozaydinli Uses to the Last Drop

Think of any burning question you have and Brooke DeVard Ozaydinli has probably answered it on her podcast, Naked Beauty. Since launching it in 2016, Ozaydinli has had Alicia Keys, Pharrell, and Gabrielle Union among her guests. And she’s not only a talented interviewer — her beauty looks, from bobs to auburn microbraids, have us constantly taking notes. “I love that I get to spend an hour going deep with people about their childhood, their self-esteem, their skin-care journey, etc.,” says the New York–born, Los Angeles–based host. “That’s special and unique. I don’t have to suffer through bland small talk; I get to get to the juicy, interesting insights and details from the start.”

She was never expecting this much success. “When I hear myself referred to as a beauty expert or I get called on to give commentary on the industry, it is sort of surreal because I started my podcast as someone who was simply passionate about beauty,” says Ozaydinli, who got her start in marketing at places like Instagram and Ralph Lauren. “I wanted to listen to these conversations that covered beauty beyond the surface, and when I couldn’t find a podcast doing this, I created my own.”

Between her inspiring interviews, she’s practicing what she preaches with self-care practices like taking her nightly magnesium and making time for her skin-care routine. “I feel very confident with my skin when I’m taking good care of myself and that’s being reflected to me physically,” she says. “Self-care allows me to do the work that fuels me. It’s nonnegotiable in terms of what I prioritize. No matter what, every night I do my full nighttime skin-care routine. It brings me back to myself in a way very few other things can.”

A.M. Routine

The morning is all about nourishing and protecting my skin. If I’ve used retinol the night before, I start with a gentle cleanser. My absolute obsession for the past year has been the Vintner’s Daughter botanical cleanser. It feels like double cleansing without double cleansing because it truly cleanses with a very gentle foaming formula. Your skin feels so soft afterward. And the real benefit to me is the smell; it has this lovely natural aroma that truly calms me. Next up is vitamin C serum from Paula’s Choice. The new formula is cream based and so much less tacky than usual vitamin C serums but still has 25 percent vitamin C, which really works to target discoloration and even skin texture. And then, of course, I always finish with sunscreen. SPF is the most important thing we can do for our skin. Currently, I love the Vita Clear SPF from Shiseido. I think Shiseido makes incredible sunscreens — they glide onto your skin and look beautiful under makeup because they give your skin a glow.

Then it’s time to pick my fragrance for the day. The right one sets your mood like nothing else. I am obsessed with Le Labo’s Matcha fragrance, but lately I’m wearing a fragrance I developed. It’s launching this summer and is a beautiful mix of neroli, orange blossom, green tea, and sandalwood. It’s earthy, but these bright citrus notes really enhance my mood. It’s truly the fragrance of my dreams, and I’m so excited to have it out in the world.

I’m also really big on incorporating supplements into my daily routine. Simple additions like chlorophyll from Sakara Life dropped into my water or AG1 to ensure I’m getting a diverse blend of plant life in my diet when I may not have time for a salad.

P.M. Routine

To wash my face at night, I’ve been using the qasil cleanser from S’able Labs. I wasn’t familiar with qasil before trying this product, and it’s such a lovely, natural way to cleanse your skin. I love the entire product line and admire how Sabrina and Idris Elba have thoughtfully and ethically sourced ingredients from Africa to integrate into their formulas.

After cleansing, I’ll go in with serums to combat hyperpigmentation or breakouts. When my skin is feeling dry, I love an overnight mask. The overnight replenishing serum from Retrouvé is my all-time favorite. I’ve never found a nighttime moisturizer that packs as many nutrients in and can transform my skin overnight. I also love the Maya Chia pressed serum concentrate and the Ranavat moonseed restoring balm. Both of these melt into the skin with the warmth of your fingers and feel like a treat with every use.

I’ve begun creating this little tray of skin-care products at my bedside to slather on my skin and then use this facial roller from Re-Nutrive from bed which I really enjoy. My two luxury serums right now are the La Mer Concentrate and the Night Serum from Dr. Barbara Sturm, both of these give my skin a beautiful glow and keep my otherwise dry skin very hydrated. I slather these on and then roll my face for 10 minutes as I chat with my husband about our days before bed. He even asks to use it after me and agrees it’s a major upgrade to our bedtime routines!

On the beauty product that actually makes a difference

This sounds so superfluous, but having a facial spray at my desk while I work has been an absolute game changer. My overall skin has improved from this practice, but more than that, it’s changed my mood. There are days, like most of us who work primarily at our computers, where I sit for eight to ten hours in front of a screen. This year, I’ve been rotating between two facial sprays: the May Lindstrom Botanical Facial Mist and the Boum Boum Milk from Violette_Fr. The May Lindstrom facial spray smells like a jasmine garden — it cools me down, forces me to take a deep inhale, and calms me. If you love jasmine and natural skin care, this is worth the investment. The Boum Boum Milk from Violette_Fr is similarly calming. I recently interviewed Violette on my podcast, and she talked about formulating this facial spray that worked like skin care to revive the skin and provide hydration. It helps with skin inflammation, and a quick spray between Zoom meetings just makes your skin look expensive and glowy in a way nothing else I’ve tried does.

On rest

Magic Magnesium from Wooden Spoon has made going to sleep such a pleasure. It’s truly like magic, and it enhances my nighttime ritual tremendously. I drift off to sleep worry free. Many of us are magnesium deficient, and incorporating magnesium into your diet can be difficult. I mix in a scoop with water and sip on it as I do my nighttime skin care routine. By the time my head hits the pillow, my entire body feels incredibly relaxed.

On movement

I’m all about strength training. My trainer, Lucy, is incredible. We used to workout even in the freezing cold in New York, but now we do our sessions on Zoom two times a week. Lifting weights has given me strength and confidence I hadn’t experienced in my years of Pilates or running.

And every afternoon, if I’m able to, I do a hike around sunset. I’ll walk slowly and text friends back, catch up on podcasts, listen to upcoming podcast episodes to edit, but most important, I use this time to breathe and reset before I go home to be with my family. My most important job is being a mom, and that evening walk helps me to reset after my workday.
