New York is still the best city for food and drinks

Food & Wine magazine just reaffirmed what we all already knew: New York is the best U.S. city for dining out.

New York ranked No. 1 on the magazine’s 2024 Best Cities for Food and Drink list. The accolade praised the city’s diverse culinary scene for possessing “the uncanny ability to deftly balance classic cuisine with the latest trends,” calling attention to spots like L’Industrie Pizzeria in Williamsburg, Superiority Burger in the East Village and Nōksu, the upscale tasting counter located inside the 34th Street Herald Square subway station.

New Orleans came in at No. 2 in the U.S. rankings, followed by Chicago, Austin and Los Angeles. Tokyo was named the top city on the international list.

The magazine named Semma, the highly-acclaimed Southern Indian spot in Greenwich Village, the third-best restaurant in the country.

The next New York name on the list: Naro, the Korean restaurant located inside the Rockefeller Center from the folks behind Atoboy and Atomix, at No. 12. That’s followed by Tatiana by Kwame Onwuachi, an Afro-Caribbean restaurant at Lincoln Center, ranked No. 19.

The single best restaurant in the U.S., according to Food & Wine, is Anajak Thai in Los Angeles.

As for Food & Wine’s list of the 15 best U.S. bars, New York dominated the top rankings. The new Superbueno at 13 1st Ave. came in first, followed directly by Katana Kitten in the West Village and Double Chicken Please on the Lower East Side.

Chez Zou at Manhattan West and Martiny’s in Gramercy Park close out New York’s representation on the bar list, sitting at No. 7 and 8, respectively.

The city also ranked first on the magazine’s list of best cities for bakeries.

The recognitions are part of Food & Wine’s 2024 Global Tastemakers program, which markets itself as “a celebration of the best food and drink experiences and destinations in the U.S. and abroad.”

The methodology, according to Food & Wine: “We asked more than 180 food and travel journalists to vote on their favorites, including restaurants and bars, cities, hotels, airports, airlines, and cruises. We then entrusted those results to an expert panel of judges to determine each category’s winners.”

Last year, when Food & Wine turned to their readers for votes, New York also ranked No. 1 on the list for Best Cities for Food in the U.S.
