New York City’s Chief Legal Officer – A Key Role in City Governance

On July 30, 2024, New York City Council spokesperson Julia Agos emphasized the importance of the role of the city’s Chief Legal Officer. This position carries the responsibility of representing the entire city government, including its agencies and all elected officials.

The Chief Legal Officer must have the trust of all city officials and the talented attorneys in the Law Department. In 2019, voters decided to give the City Council the authority of advice and consent for the Chief Legal Officer due to concerns that the city’s top attorney might prioritize the mayor’s interests over those of the city.

The Council will review the nomination of Randy Mastro, proposed by Mayor Adams, within 30 days of its official receipt at a meeting. A public hearing will be scheduled for thorough examination and public comment.

This step is part of a transparent process that ensures the Chief Legal Officer will serve in the best interest of the entire city.
