There comes a time in any young male performer’s life when he is faced with the press tour for his latest gay role and must make a choice: come out as straight or give a vague quote about how sexuality is fluid. It has happened to Josh O’Connor, Jack Falahee, Darren Criss, Taron Egerton, Andrew Garfield, and now Nicholas Galitzine, who came out as straight on May 8 in British GQ, igniting the same discourse all over again. Galitzine has played gay multiple times in the past year (Red, White & Royal Blue and Mary & George) and gave a homoerotic performance in Bottoms. “I identify as a straight man, but I have been a part of some incredible queer stories,” Galitzine said. “I felt a sense of uncertainty sometimes about whether I’m taking up someone’s space, and perhaps guilt. At the same time, I see those characters as not solely their sexuality.”
By this point, everyone’s going through the motions. There have been so many articles, Reddit posts, Twitter threads, Quora queries, and actors sharing their opinions over the years. Each rehashes why it’s okay or “not okay,” if straight people should or shouldn’t, how it can be done “the right way,” and, of course, the fact that “no one owes” the public their sexuality.
