New York City Invests $2 Million in Youth Summer Programs

On August 2, 2024, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) Commissioner Keith Howard announced a $2 million investment in expanded summer programs and services to ensure the safety of young people during the final weeks of summer. These programs and services will be targeted at historically underserved neighborhoods, including the six priority New York City Police Department (NYPD) precincts identified in the “A Blueprint for Community Safety,” a forward-thinking strategy to address gun violence across the five boroughs. This news is part of Mayor Adams’ “Summer of Possibility,” celebrating New York City’s unparalleled summer offerings, as crime decreases, job opportunities increase, and the city becomes more livable under the Adams administration.

Mayor Adams stated, “This summer, our administration has reduced crime, kept young people safe, and highlighted the best of fun and entertainment that New York City has to offer. In the final weeks of summer, we are doubling down on our efforts and investing millions to prevent violence on our streets. By investing in summer programs, we not only provide young people with a space for enjoyment but also prevent crime in our communities. Together, we will ensure that our summer concludes by providing young people with all the necessary resources to thrive and enjoy our city.”

First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright added, “With this $2 million expansion of summer programming, the Adams administration continues to invest in public safety, ensuring that young people, especially those in historically underserved neighborhoods, have the resources they need to flourish. From programs like ‘Saturday Night Lights’ to ‘Cornerstone’ and ‘Beacon,’ these initiatives enrich lives, foster community trust, and empower youth to reach their full potential.”
