Like an apple hanging from a tree, Katy Perry’s latest album has ripened and is nearly ready to drop. After months of teasing what fans have dubbed “KP6,” this week Perry announced the album’s lead single, “Woman’s World,” out July 11 — and shared a ten-second snippet.

The album will be Perry’s first in four years, and it’s already sparking plenty of conversation. Hours after Perry announced “Women’s World,” Kesha tweeted “lol” — a dig many connected to rumors, then a subsequent report from Rolling Stone, that Perry worked with Dr. Luke on the upcoming album. Kesha accused Dr. Luke, who had been her longtime producer, of sexual assault and emotional abuse in 2014. He countersued for defamation, resulting in an extended legal battle that was not settled until last year.

On TikTok, some observed the irony that a song purportedly about female empowerment would be produced in collaboration with an alleged abuser. Others were hung up on the snippet itself, which prompted countless AI jokes as well as comparisons to the TJ Maxx retail playlist and toilet-paper advertisements. While some fans — including RuPaul’s Drag Race star Katya — showed disappointment, others seem committed to the earlier narrative that Perry’s comeback would dominate the summer.

Maybe just take a minute to appreciate “Teenage Dream” before going back to streaming Charli XCX all summer?
