Kelly Clarkson Opens Up About Using Weight-Loss Drugs

Following months of speculation surrounding her appearance, Kelly Clarkson said on Monday that she has been taking weight-loss medication. The subject came up while she was talking with Whoopi Goldberg on The Kelly Clarkson Show. When Clarkson remarked, “Every time I run into you, you look younger! You’re like Benjamin Button,” Goldberg replied that it’s because of “all the weight I’ve lost.” Goldberg, who said in March that she’s taking Mounjaro, added that she’s “doing that wonderful shot that works for folks who need some help, and it’s been really good.” In response, Clarkson said she too has “lost a lot” and confirmed that she’s taking a weight-loss medication, though, she said, “mine is a different one than people assume.” Clarkson didn’t name which medication she’s on, but said it’s “not Ozempic.”

Clarkson said her doctor had urged her to take medication for two years, but she was afraid and was dealing with thyroid problems. She said she ultimately started taking medication “because my blood work got so bad,” adding that the drug she’s on helps her body break down sugar “because my body doesn’t do it right.”

While celebrities like Oprah and Rebel Wilson have discussed their use of weight-loss medication, it still feels rare to hear someone in the spotlight discuss the drugs casually. Even as millions of Americans have turned to GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro — which suppress appetite, thus leading to weight loss — much of the conversation around personal use remains shrouded in secrecy and shame. Celebrities don’t owe us any explanation about their health decisions, but there’s still something refreshing about hearing them be honest about how they are losing weight.
