Angela Hamblin-Blakely named new girls coach at West Side

Former All-American Angela Hamblin-Blakely is the new head girls’ basketball coach at the Gary West Side Leadership Academy.

The Gary Community School Corp. announced Hamblin-Blakely’s appointment Monday.

“I am beyond excited to enter into this new chapter where I can play a role in positively impacting the lives of young student-athletes at West Side Leadership Academy,” said Hamblin-Blakely.

“It means the world to me to share the skills, fundamentals and lessons learned about a game I love so much.”

The 1994 Lew Wallace graduate was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021 and starred at the University of Iowa.

She earned two-time Big Ten Conference honors and was named the 1997 Big Ten Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. She played for the Detroit Shock in the WNBA.

She has been a teacher and coach at the Gary schools, Lake Central, Bishop Noll Institute and Calumet College of St. Joseph.
