Portage Police are investigating a fatal shooting early Monday morning in which a Hammond man died.

Police were called around 12:35 a.m. to the 5300 block of Aspen Avenue for a report of a shooting. Officers found a male inside the residence with an apparent gunshot wound, according to a release.

Officers provided immediate medical assistance, but the victim did not survive.

The investigation is ongoing and detectives have identified a person of interest. “We do not believe there is an active threat to the community as this incident appears to be isolated to the people who were present at the time of the shooting,” Capt. Rob Maynard, the department’s public information officer, said in the release.

The deceased is believed to be from Hammond. Further identification will be released once the Porter County Coroner’s Office has notified the family.
