Montefiore Medical Center seeks to build a new cardiac electrophysiology and intervention room at its Moses campus in a project that will cost more than $11 million, according to a certificate of need application filed with the state Department of Health Monday.
The Moses campus in the Norwood neighborhood of the Bronx currently operates three electrophysiology laboratories, which allow doctors to diagnose and treat heart rhythm issues, plus five cardiac catheterization labs. However, the volume of electrophysiology procedures has doubled over the last several years, the filing shows. Dr. Mario Garcia, the chief of Montefiore’s division of cardiology, added that a growing number of Bronx patients need heart procedures, including emergency procedures, and care as they age and the current space is often at capacity.
Therefore, Montefiore aims to treat more patients by building an additional interventional cardiology room where doctors can perform complex coronary, valvular and electrophysiology procedures for heart attacks and pulmonary embolisms. Such procedures include percutaneous coronary interventions, which help open blocked arteries, and implanting devices.
The renovation would create one new procedure room and one isolation space for patients to prepare for or recover from surgeries. Garcia added that the hospital aims to make patients’ current recovery rooms larger and build an additional three, bringing the total number of private recuperation spaces to nine.
Physicians at Moses currently perform three to four procedures each day in its cardiac spaces, Garcia said. The hospital will be able to treat several hundreds more patients each year if the project is approved.
The project cost includes buying equipment for the new space and hiring staff to operate the additional lab, the filing said. According to the health equity assessment submitted with the filing, the project would not reduce or expand the hospital’s number of certified beds, services or operating hours by more than 10%.
Montefiore Medical Center operates 10 hospitals across the Bronx and Westchester.
