What’s Bigger Than an F5 Twister? The Twisters Press Tour

Over 25 years after Twistertwirled its way into moviegoers’ hearts, Universal Pictures and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment have planned a “big scale” sequel called Twisters. And now it looks like Twisters has not only swept up their director but their cast as well. Minari director Lee Isaac Chung is on board to direct the film, according to Variety. Deadline also reports that“Spielberg himself flipped for the script by The Revenant scribe Mark L. Smith, and his enthusiasm provided the impetus for the fast-tracked film.” Sources say they’re hoping to bring back Helen Hunt. This sounds like it will either be incredible (if they showcase practical effects) or mid (if they don’t). The press tour kicked off at Cinemacon with an inflatable cow and wind effects, giving some real William Castle vibes to the promotion. Now the only thing left for them to do is to bring back Twister … Ride It Out. But in the mean time, here’s everything we know about Twisters.

A super trailer that debuted at the SuperBowl

Glen Powell in a cowboy hat? Oh hell yeah.

Who’s getting twisted?

Daisy Edgar-Jones and Powell are leading the cast as Kate Cooper and Tyler Owens who are two storm chasers who “try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.” Joining them for the thrills are In The Heights’s Anthony Ramos, Maura Tierney, supernatural expert Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, Sasha Lane, Kiernan Shipka, and Nik Dodani.

What’s the deal with the storm?

Cooper is a former storm chaser who gets called by Javi (Ramos) to “test a groundbreaking new tracking system.” She meets Owens, a storm-chasing social media influencer, where they end up “squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma.”

How silly is the press tour?

Twisters is not taking itself too seriously during the press tour. At Cinemacon 2024, Ramos came through with an inflatable cow as his press partner. On stage, a fan blew fake leaves in Glen Powell’s face, mimicking the faux nature with which he had to contend while shooting.

And if that wasn’t goofy enough, Twisters is bringing back those fake cyclone things that used to haunt dying malls. You remember those, right? They were also in science museums gift stores. Fans can take a selfie in the eye of a tornado, if that’s the sort of thing you’re into.

When is it hitting?

Brace yourself on July 19.
