Waukegan carjacking leads to multi-city, high-speed chase

Police arrested two men and recovered a number of firearms after a Waukegan carjacking that led to a multi-city, high-speed chase Sunday, according to Lake County prosecutors.

J’Keveon Lewis, 18, and Elijah Monette, 20, both of Waukegan, were ordered Monday to remain in jail until prosecutors can ask for pretrial detention. Those hearings are scheduled for Tuesday.

They are charged with unlawful use of a weapon charges, and Monette is charged with aggravated vehicular carjacking.

Prosecutors said they accosted a woman and her son in the parking lot of the Waukegan Target store at about 2 p.m., and forced them out of their car at gunpoint.

The pair, along with several others, then drove off in the woman’s car, Assistant State’s Attorney Jeffrey Facklam said at their hearings in first-appearance court.

The carjacking sparked what he described as a, “multi-city, high-speed chase” involving multiple police agencies.

Eventually, the chase ended in North Chicago when six people exited the car and tried to get away on foot. Police were able to take the two men into custody.

Facklam said police recovered a number of firearms, including a semi-automatic pistol that had been converted to function as a fully automatic machine gun-type of weapon.
