A man is dead and three more were injured after a “dispute” in the south side Grand Crossing neighborhood escalated to shooting Monday evening, Chicago police said.
Deputy Chief Don Jerome said the shooting took place at about 5:40 p.m. near the intersection of 71st Street and State Street. Responding officers found a 59-year-old man shot in the midsection, who was pronounced dead shortly afterward at UChicago Medicine, and a 49-year-old man who had been in an ATM with a gunshot wound to the forehead, Jerome said.
Officers arrested a suspect nearby the two victims with a gunshot wound in the leg and recovered a gun from that person, he said. The suspect was in critical condition at Christ Hospital and the 49-year-old victim was in grave condition at UChicago Medicine, he said.
A fourth man with a gunshot wound in his leg was later dropped off at UChicago Medicine and is thought to have been injured in the same shooting, Jerome said. The 59-year-old and the 49-year-old “appear both to be innocent bystanders” to the gunfire, he said.
Area One detectives are investigating.
