The Aurora City Council is set to vote on about a $3.6 million bid package for further work on the new Public Works building.
The bids are for seven trade packages for work at the building going up near Liberty Street and County Farm Road on the far East Side of the city.
The bids are for modifications made in the original plan, most notably for the buildout of the second floor of the building to house the city’s Engineering Division. It also would include a mother’s room for employees.
Aldermen put approval of the purchase order, through Aurora-based RC Wegman Construction Company, the project manager, on the consent agenda for Tuesday’s City Council meeting, meaning it’s likely to be approved.
“This is the third major bid package and the last one,” said Ken Schroth, the city’s Public Works director. He said there will be several smaller bid packages still to come for some smaller parts of the project.
The new Public Works building would become home for five of the 16 divisions within the Public Works Department.
It would include some offices, a maintenance area for city vehicles, some truck storage and a refueling station for city vehicles, including police cars. There also would be a salt dome for storage of road salt for the winter.
Aldermen already have approved several major bid packages for the project.
One bid package for $17.7 million for work on the project had been estimated at between $22 million and $25.5 million by Aurora-based RC Wegman.
The other bid package was for $9.2 million with Berger Excavating Contractors for site grading, site development and construction of the salt dome.
“So far, we’re still below the budget estimate,” Schroth said.
He added the building could be substantially finished by December, with the hope of having the building fully occupied by the second quarter of 2025.
