In the credits for the latest season of Couples Therapy, which came out last week on Showtime via Paramount+, someone named “Natasha Obama” is credited as a casting interviewer. “Who the heck is that?” you might be asking. Well, I don’t think it’s someone who just so happens to have the same last name as the 44th president of the United States. Based on a few seconds of Googling, it would appear that Barack and Michelle’s younger daughter, Sasha, worked on the hit show.
Sasha is the shortened version of Natasha, her full name being Natasha Marian Obama. It seems that she’s opted to use her government name in her professional life — and is following in her older sister’s footsteps in a couple of ways. Both young women are working in the entertainment industry, and Malia Obama also chose to tweak her name a bit. Earlier this year, she was credited as Malia Ann for her debut short film. I’ll be honest: Had Sasha taken the same tack and gone as “Natasha Marian,” we probably wouldn’t have noticed. Obama is the recognizable part, girl!
Given that Malia faced so many accusations of nepotism when she started her career, Sasha seems to have thoughtfully broken into the industry on a lower rung of the casting department. Doing the casting interviews for Couples Therapy sounds like a dream job for a nosy person, but it doesn’t have quite the same prestige as interning on Girls at 17 years old. It’s also notable that even though her parents have a production company where they literally make Oscar-winning documentaries, Sasha seems to be charting a separate path in the documentary industry.
Now, the real question is, Did Sasha interview the throuple from this season? If she’s even partially responsible for them being on our screens, she is doing the Lord’s work.
