LONG-TERM CARE: Aging advocates and labor organizations sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stuart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie last week urging them to pass legislation to increase transparency and oversight of managed long-term care plans. The Managed Long-Term Care Transparency Act, sponsored by Assemblywoman Jessica González-Rojas and Senator Rachel May, would mandate that state health officials publish data on the use of home care hours and how much money the state funnels to insurers – data the state already collects, the legislators say. Organizations including labor union 1199 SEIU, AARP and New York Caring Majority urged the legislative leaders to pass the bill before the end of session.
SUICIDE PREVENTION: The state’s Office of Mental Health held the suicide prevention task force’s inaugural meeting on Friday, reconvening a panel that started in 2017. The 32-member task force, which was created to develop public health approaches to reduce suicide rates, discussed ways to improve equity and accessibility of mental health care and address workforce shortages. The task force will have six virtual meetings on a bi-monthly schedule, OMH said.
