BIRD FLU: Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and New York City health executives called on the White House at a press conference Monday to share its efforts to coordinate with state agencies to control the bird flu outbreak. The U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have detected one case of bird flu that was transmitted to a person by a dairy cow in Texas, sparking concern about further transmission from animals to humans. Although there are no confirmed bird flu cases in New York’s dairy cow population, Gillibrand said the state’s large dairy industry is a cause for concern.
PREGNANCY CENTER: Maimonides Medical Center said it received $750,000 from state health officials Monday to upgrade its early pregnancy assessment center, part of the state’s effort to safeguard access to abortion care. The funding, administered through the New York State Abortion Access Program, will aid the Borough Park health system in making facility upgrades and hiring providers to offer immediate pregnancy and reproductive health care in the early days of pregnancy. Maimonides’ early pregnancy assessment center is the only hospital-based pregnancy center in Brooklyn, the health system said.
