Police chase suspect to Orland Park after armed robbery in Palos Heights

A man led police on a chase from Palos Heights to Orland Park Tuesday following an armed robbery at a Palos Heights AT&T store, police said.

Palos Heights police received a call at 7:15 p.m. for a hold up at the AT&T store at 11901 South Harlem Avenue, said Deputy Police Chief Mike Yott.

Yott said Wednesday he could not provide the man’s name.

Video showed the man holding two employees at gunpoint as they emptied out the safe into a bag, Yott said. When he left the room, the two employees locked themselves inside for protection, he said.

When officers arrived, they saw a man inside the store holding a large bag, Yott said. The man dropped the bag when he saw police and then used the butt of his gun to break a nearby window, Yott said.

He left the store through the broken window, ran to his car and drove off, Yott said. The officers chased the car until it became unsafe to do so, he said.

Palos Heights police alerted neighboring towns about the fleeing vehicle, Yott said.

The Orland Park Police Department came across the vehicle with a flat tire in the area of 14900 block of LaGrange Avenue, according to Orland Park Police Department social media and Yott.

The Orland Park Police Department did not respond to requests for comment.

The man barricaded himself in the car before surrendering to police, Yott said. He was turned over to the Palos Heights Police Department, he said.

“Orland Park was outstanding. They did a great job,” Yott said. “They were a huge help.”
