In a significant move to enhance Park Avenue, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, alongside Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez, announced plans to transform the stretch between East 46th Street and East 57th Street. The initiative aims to introduce more greenery, public seating, concessions, and safer pedestrian crossings.
The city has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to develop a unified design for this section of Park Avenue, which is situated above the Grand Central Terminal Train Shed. This area is currently undergoing extensive renovations by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)’s Metro-North Railroad.
Mayor Adams emphasized the importance of high-quality public spaces, stating, “These spaces are essential for revitalizing commercial corridors like Midtown and creating a safer, more affordable, and better city for all New Yorkers.” He highlighted that the project would ensure Park Avenue becomes more enjoyable for residents and visitors once the MTA completes its underground work.
First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright added, “We are taking this opportunity to make transformative changes that will make New York City a more attractive place to live and visit.”
This effort is part of a broader vision to reimagine Fifth Avenue as a pedestrian-friendly boulevard and to enhance public spaces in business districts throughout the city.
