The “Padlock to Protect” operation targets the closure of illegal cannabis shops located near schools, religious sites, and youth facilities. These shops often sell dangerous and uncertified products that pose a serious health risk to the community, especially children and youth. Mayor Eric Adams emphasized that these illegal activities undermine the legal market and create a sense of lawlessness on the city’s streets.
The collaboration of several agencies, including the Sheriff’s Office, NYPD, and DCWP, has led to significant results. Since the operation began in May 2024, 779 shops have been sealed, fines totaling over $65 million have been issued, and illegal products worth $41 million have been confiscated. These actions are part of the Adams administration’s broader efforts to improve quality of life and public safety in New York City.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul also supported the local authorities’ efforts by granting new powers for the swift and permanent closure of illegal shops. She emphasized that these measures are necessary to build a strong and fair cannabis industry that protects both consumers and legal retailers.
