New York City Mayor Eric Adams and the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) have announced a new agreement with Uber and Lyft that will significantly increase driver earnings. The agreement aims to drastically reduce access restrictions, known as “lockouts,” which have decreased driver incomes since mid-May.
“Our Uber and Lyft drivers take us where we need to go, and now it’s time to help them earn a decent wage,” said Mayor Adams. “We will always fight for working New Yorkers, and today’s agreement will put money in the pockets of hardworking drivers and help them continue to live in the greatest city in the world,” he added.
The agreement includes:
Reducing and gradually eliminating access restrictions on Uber and Lyft platforms by Labor Day.
Pausing the hiring of new drivers to increase work for existing drivers.
Supporting drivers through minimum wage policies and debt relief programs.
The Adams administration has implemented minimum wage rules for drivers and delivery workers, leading to a significant increase in their earnings. The Medallion Relief Program has provided $468 million in debt relief to medallion owners.
This agreement is part of Mayor Adams’ efforts to support working drivers in New York City and ensure they earn a decent income.
