Mayor Eric Adams has announced new measures to enhance public safety at New York City’s beaches. In response to a rise in drowning incidents, the administration is extending lifeguard hours and using drones to monitor swimmers and detect sharks.
Lifeguards will remain on duty until 8:00 PM during heat waves, even though beaches will close for swimming at 6:00 PM. This will allow for a quick response in emergencies and improve coordination between the NYPD, FDNY, and emergency services.
“Our goal is to ensure maximum safety for everyone visiting our beaches,” said Mayor Adams. “With the new protocols and the use of drones for monitoring, we can more effectively prevent incidents and save lives.”
These measures are part of the broader efforts by Adams’ administration to improve public safety and create a safer and more accessible city for all New Yorkers.
