Although we find ourselves in film’s most sexless and puritanical era since Y2K, Bridgerton, but a mere Regency soap opera, is bravely keeping sex scenes on life support, much to the delight of (most) hosts of The View. On June 14, a day after the third season of the horny Shondaland and Netflix show premiered, the daytime talk show simply had to discuss the six-minute-long sex scene between Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton). A plurality of panelists were all for the extended scene — all except Joy Behar, who thought Bridgerton could have cut out some of the nasty. A puzzled Ana Navarro asked audience members to clap if they opposed a six-minute sex scene, earning only silence and scattered chuckles from the crowd. “You could leave a little to the imagination,” Behar countered. “Remember in the old days, they’d be on the beach making out and then the waves would crash. You knew what they were doing. But now, they have to see the exact thing.” Sunny Hostin called Bridgerton’s sex scene “beautiful” for its depiction of consent.
Alyssa Farah Griffin, for her part, said the not-so-quiet part out loud. “This is what we tune in to Bridgerton for! You want the steamy, romantic sex,” she proclaimed. Other movies and TV shows, take note. We want to watch Polin match each other’s freaks — Coughlan’s parents not included!
