If you’re reading this with a fully developed frontal lobe, you’ll probably never experience what it’s like to kiss Leonardo DiCaprio. But if you’re still harboring that millennial fantasy, know that “it’s not all it’s cracked up to be,” at least according to Kate Winslet.
In a new video for Vanity Fair, Winslet looks back at her classic films, starting with James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster Titanic, which starred her and DiCaprio as the romantic leads. “He’s quite the romancer, isn’t he?” Winslet remarked while rewatching the iconic Jack and Rose sunset scene. “No wonder every young girl in the world wants to be kissed by Leonardo DiCaprio. It was not all that it’s cracked up to be.”
In fact, it sounds messy: Winslet says she and DiCaprio were slathered in face makeup for the scene — DiCaprio in fake tan, Winslet in pale colors — and that she had to do “makeup checks” between takes, even keeping brushes tucked away in either side of her dress. “We kept doing this kiss … and I would end up looking as though I’d been sucking a caramel chocolate bar after each take because his makeup would come off on me,” Winslet recalled. “And he just looked like there was a bit missing from his face, because there was this big pale bit from all my makeup getting onto him.”
Foundation mishaps aside, Winslet went on to say that she feels “very proud” of Titanic, even if that means people try to get her to reenact the sunset scene every time she’s “on a flipping boat.” Hopefully the reenactments involve less fake tanner.
