You might expect someone who writes chart-topping songs about heartbreak to have experience with both sides of a breakup, but apparently that’s not true for Billie Eilish. Speaking with Lana Ddel Rey for Interview magazine, Eilish revealed that she’s always been the one to end her relationships.
“I’ve never been dumped, and also, I’ve never been broken up with. I’ve only done the breaking up,” Eilish told Del Rey. Eilish was quick to clarify her statement, saying, “I think when people hear that, they’re like, ‘Oh, all you do is break hearts.’ Sure, but that doesn’t mean that people are totally innocent. It means that I was like, ‘Oh, let me get the fuck out of here.’ Or it means things just weren’t right.”
Eilish said that even though being broken up with “hurts like hell,” she thinks being the one who ends things is probably harder. “Honestly, the pain of knowing that you have to end something with somebody that you genuinely love is so horrible,” she said. On top of that, “You don’t get to even have the, like, ‘I got dumped, so fuck you guys. I get to go crazy and have a reaction and be mad at you. And I get to make you into an enemy, because you broke up with me.’ You can’t do that. You can’t become a victim.” In May of last year, a rep for Eilish confirmed to “Page Six” that she and the Neighbourhood singer Jesse Rutherford had broken up seven months after going public with their relationship. Before that, she dated actor Matthew Tyler Vorce and rapper Brandon Adams (who goes by the stage name 7:AMP).
Over the past several months, Eilish has been opening up about her personal life, revealing that she’s queer (but doesn’t want to be labeled), declaring that she “should have a Ph.D. in masturbation,” sharing that she broke up with an ex after having a dream about Christian Bale, and proudly singing that she “could eat that girl for lunch.” Eilish told Del Rey that even though she doesn’t know how many times she’s actually been in love, she feels like there are “different versions of love.” She added, “I think that you can be in love and it might not be deep.”
