Last week, when Rihanna stepped out in New York wearing a dress that said, “I’m retired,” she sent fans spiraling, wondering if she was trying to tell them something. But it turns out she didn’t mean for anyone to take her literally. Not only is she not retiring, she claims she’s actually working on her ninth album.
“People got triggered with that ‘retired’ word,” Rihanna told Entertainment Tonight on Monday at the L.A. launch for Fenty Hair. “They were like, ‘We’re never getting an album now.’” She added that “No one read the other line,” referring to the much smaller print on her dress that read, “This is as dressed up as I get.” Rolling her eyes on the carpet, she said, “Clearly, I’m here, clocked in.”

Rihanna can’t blame fans who are ready to give up hope that the album is on the way. She acknowledged how long they’ve been waiting, joking on Monday that Fenty Hair was “probably the longest I’ve ever taken to create something — no, I lied, that’s R9.” Elaborating on the album, she told ET, “I’m rediscovering things. I have been working on the album for so long that I kinda put all that stuff aside and now I’m prepared to go back in the studio. I’m gonna start — give me a second!” That wasn’t the only speculation Rihanna took the opportunity to address. Speaking with ET, she said that she “would definitely have more kids,” but “I’m not pregnant, if that’s what you’re asking.”
And for anyone who might still be skeptical about R9 really being in the works — after all, Rih has been known to tease her fans — she doubled down, also telling Extra on Monday, “I’m not retired.”
