The 1975 singer Matty Healy seemingly confirmed his engagement to model Gabbriette Bechtel with the help of a reference to Charli XCX’s new album / meme generator, Brat. “MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT,” Bechtel captioned an Instagram Story of a black ring on her ring finger. This apparent announcement came on the same night that Healy and Bechtel were spotted at a Charli show in New York. After logging into his account and sharing a bunch of memes, Healy reposted the ring photo. Bechtel later also posted a mirror selfie that appears to show the ring on her left hand.

There’s been speculation that Charli’s song “Sympathy is a knife” contains lyrics about her hope that Healy would break up with Taylor Swift, whom he briefly dated until June 2023. Maybe Charli just wanted a closer friend of hers to end up with her fiancé’s bandmate? (She’s engaged to 1975 drummer George Daniel.) Bechtel, who was hand-picked by Charli to front the punk rock band Nasty Cherry, recently starred as one of the “It” girls in Charli’s “360” music video, and is name-dropped in the song’s lyrics. According to People, she has been romantically linked to Healy since September 2023. Are Healy and Bechtel actually engaged, or is the couple just trolling us? Vulture has reached out to representatives for Healy and Bechtel for comment. In the meantime, the internet is running with the idea, with some even joking that Healy is Brat-ty enough to propose during the show:
