A now-shuttered kosher market in Sheepshead Bay appears to be giving way to a growing halal grocery chain amid the changing demographics of southern Brooklyn.
A private Brooklyn entity likely linked to popular halal market Tashkent has purchased the home of former kosher grocery store Freddy’s in Sheepshead Bay, city records reveal, for $16 million, a significant haul for the area.
The limited liability company with ties to Tashkent Supermarket — an original Brighton Beach staple that sells Uzbek fare and, according to Eater, is home to one of the city’s “greatest hot buffets” — scooped up the parcel at 2837 Coney Island Ave. from another entity called Med Partners, according to a deed that appeared in the city register Tuesday. Uzbekistan is a largely Muslim country in Central Asia.
Ilhanan Israilov is listed as the sole member of Med Partners, records indicate. The building was previously occupied by the kosher goods store Freddy’s from 2022 until it closed earlier this year and moved to a new location at 1502 Ave. M.
As for the Coney Island Avenue building, Misa Khayriddinova, whose LinkedIn lists her as a longtime employee — and now manager — of Tashkent, signed for the $9 million mortgage that went along with the sale of the building at the corner of Avenue Z, records show. And attorney Russ Nazrisho of the firm Nazrisho & Associates in Dyker Heights represented the buyer.
Neither Tashkent Supermarket nor Nazrisho responded to requests for comment or would confirm the buyer’s identity and its connection to the Central Asian halal chain, but Nazrisho is also listed as the attorney of record on several other transactions involving Tashkent.
When the chain’s owner, Odiljon Tursunov, acquired the property at 1769 86th St. in Bensonhurst for $18 million in 2021 to open up another outpost as part of his plans to expand in the borough — then his third location — he retained Nazrisho for the sale as well, according to the deed at the time. And when he bought 1104 Kings Highway, along with another space, for $34 million in 2022, Nazrisho again helped to facilitate the sale, records show. And at yet another Tashkent location at 2828 Coney Island Ave., less than 500 feet from 2837 Coney Island Ave., Nazrisho is again listed as the attorney, records show.
The Uzbek population in the southern Brooklyn neighborhoods of Sheepshead Bay and Brighton Beach has been growing for more than two decades and now represents 2.4% of the population, according to the latest census data from 2020. Though it’s a small percentage, the Uzbek population only makes up 0.3% citywide. And according to a 2017 New York Times story, the number of Uzbekistan-born residents living in Brooklyn more than doubled from 5,033 in 2000 to 13,651 in 2015.
The halal chain became such a sensation that in 2022 Eater ran with a story that Tashkent was finally coming to Manhattan, opening an outpost at 378 Sixth Ave. in Greenwich Village, much to the excitement of locals. But two years later, the market has yet to open.
