Drake, who has been (mostly) quiet since losing (sorry) the rap battle to Kendrick Lamar, is in the news once again (and not because he came up with an epic rebuttal). This time, what he needs to defend is not his reputation but rather … his pants. Recently, while attending his son’s soccer game, he wore pants that lack shape and need tailoring. He styled said pants with a white tee, a cardigan draped over his shoulders, and a Rolex, of course. Not the soccer dad we envision on the field, but, in true Drake fashion, it’s what he deemed as the best dad fit. He threw shade at Lamar in his caption, saying, “Goats don’t worry about one trick ponies,” but it was the khaki baggy trousers that caught the eyes of fans (and haters): Some favored them, and some did not.
“Next-level dad duties fit,” a commenter said. Another comment praising the pants said, “No lie, the pants are fly!” Others, who weren’t fond of the look, commented, “The soccer papi fit is wild.” Another comment read, “Hard fit but I’m a tapered leg guy myself?.” On X, a tweet said he’s dressing like Katharine Hepburn. His pants weren’t the only thing fans joked about; they also joked about the type of soccer dad he is. “Drake the type of rapper that hands out orange wedges at his son’s soccer game,” someone commented.

The Stylist Who Wishes the Pants Were Tailored
Wardrobe stylist Ian McRae is no stranger to styling men in trousers, but they’re always perfectly tailored to the body. McRae’s advice for styling oversize pants resembles how Drake wore them. “Pair with neutrals, as Drake has done, or think about proportions. Smaller or more structured tops could work as well as a nice button-down shirt,” he says. If he could change one thing about the pants, it would be tailoring the bottoms, but “the fall of the pants isn’t horrible.” McRae himself would wear the pants for a sporty daytime look and isn’t mad at the new direction of style for Drake. “I really like the pants and the new look. It adds a bit more elevation to the new way rappers are dressing. I don’t know if Drake is the best person for quiet luxury, but it opens the door to more masculine guys to play with their wardrobes and see what works for them and what doesn’t.”
The Stylist Who Calls It Cosplay
Another stylist, who chooses to remain anonymous for fear of backlash, loves the pants, though she wouldn’t wear them herself. “I’d style someone in them, definitely, but in a more pared-back way,” she says. “It’s like a lot of a look and too on the nose with styling; it’s styled like cosplay. It’s too much of a concept and looks forced.” When I asked her if quiet luxury could be Drake’s lane, she said, “he’s quietly doing the most.” A listener responded, “Is anything Drake does quiet?”
The Stylist Who Doesn’t Hate It
Stylist Alexander Julian isn’t a fan of Drake, but he’s a fan of the look. “I’m always excited to see men play with proportions and silhouettes. I think he styled them well enough,” Julian says. “One of my favorite markers for proportion play is figuring out if you’re a big-pant, small-shirt person or big-shirt, small-pant person. Looks like Drake is cosplaying as the former, and it’s not a bad look.”
The Stylist Who Never Looks to Drake for Fashion
As a stylist to athletes, Dex Robinson admittedly never looks to Drake for anything related to fashion, but he doesn’t mind the oversize-pants look on the rapper. “I wouldn’t change the pants; I would probably change the way it was styled. I think oversize pants look best with a more cropped or boxy top. I don’t mind a slimmer top as well,” Robinson says. He believes it varies based on who is wearing the pants. Would he wear them himself? “Absolutely,” he says. “They’re versatile pants. I don’t think they need a specific occasion.
The Stylist Who Loves a Summer Linen and the Belt
“The silhouette is perfect. Going into the summer months, linen is always a must,” Scot Louie says. While Louie, too, is partial to an oversize fit, he would’ve “taken them in about an inch through the side seams for a more tapered look while still maintaining the oversize appearance.” Louie believes that oversize pants can easily go from chic to sloppy, because of how the shape gets lost, but “balancing out proportions is necessary,” Louie says, and “Drake did well by creating a waist.” He’d wear them himself and loves that this was the attire for his son’s game: “The look gives ‘good dad.’ They were appropriate for the occasion.”
Well, Kendrick did tell him to learn how to be a better dad. Maybe the pants are a start.
