By all appearances, Rihanna is sick of being asked if/when she’ll drop a new album. On Thursday, she was spotted walking around New York rocking Puma sneakers, a Bottega Veneta east-west bag, and a Conner Ives T-shirt dress reading, “I’m retired,” and below that, “This is as dressed up as I get.” Ouch.
Earlier in the week, she announced that her latest venture, Fenty Hair, is on the way. As exciting as that was to some, it was also yet another reminder that making new music isn’t high on Rih’s to-do list. Anti, her last album, was released in 2016. Since then she’s been busy becoming a billionaire, falling in love, raising her two sons, and running Savage X Fenty and Fenty Beauty.

Although she released an Oscar-nominated song in 2022, headlined last year’s Super Bowl, and occasionally teases that new music might be on the way, it feels more and more unlikely with each passing day. Then again, maybe Rihanna’s just trolling us and R9 is closer than we realize.
