Achieving good health involves more than going to the doctor when you’re sick. It requires keen attention to every aspect of your lifestyle, from diet to exercise to regular screenings and the careful management of chronic diseases. It means taking proactive steps to help prevent disease and illness in the first place.
As Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield launches its 2024 Whole Health Heroes Awards, the fifth such annual event, the health plan is reaffirming its holistic and preventive approach to health care, one that encompasses the physical, behavioral, and social drivers of good health. Social factors alone account for around 80% of a person’s health, such as access to healthy food, transportation and housing, according to The World Economic Forum.
Whole health isn’t just an aspiration; it’s a tangible and achievable goal. To that end, Anthem stresses the importance of its members’ relationship with a primary care provider. That’s because regular checkups, screenings and preventive care can help spot life threatening diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and hypertension early on, and improve outcomes. The insurer helps its members attain good health by offering free preventive care visits, screenings, and immunizations when using in-network providers and facilities. Anthem also helps its members protect themselves against preventable diseases through vaccinations and lifestyle changes that can reduce the risk of chronic conditions.
The health plan is equally committed to members’ mental and behavioral health by encouraging screening for conditions such as depression and anxiety. Anthem strives for health equity by tackling health disparities in underserved communities and ensuring they can achieve whole health. Anthem’s digital strategy expands health care access to all member via telehealth and electronic health information.
The 2024 awards Whole Health awards reflect and amplify Anthem’s commitment to whole health. “We are proud to highlight the individuals and organizations who are making a real difference in improving the health and well-being of all New Yorkers, said Victor DeStefano, president of Anthem NY Commercial. “By working together, we can improve how we screen, prevent, and manage chronic conditions and address the physical, behavioral, and social drivers of health. Nominations open on May 27 and will be accepted through July 12.
This year’s criteria
Anthem is seeking nominations of leaders across all industries who work in the New York metro area, including NYC’s five boroughs, Long Island, Westchester, and Rockland Counties. Candidates must be employed full-time or have worked in their current field for at least five years.
Please explain, in a 300- to 500-word essay, how the individual’s leadership has impacted New Yorkers’ health and wellness, according to any of the following criteria:
- Led the innovation of a drug, medical treatment, or new testing procedure as it relates to asthma, cancer, diabetes, or heart health, making a difference in screening, preventing, and/or managing any of these diseases.
- Established and implemented employee wellness strategies within their organization to promote mental and overall health.
- Demonstrated a passion in using their influence to advance financial health within their community or for the benefit of New York’s underserved communities.
- Used their influence to advance social health within their organization and the broader community.
A panel comprised of representatives of Anthem and Crain’s New York Business Content Studio will select this year’s winners. The Crain’s New York Business newsroom is not involved in the judging or selection of the honorees.
This year’s 25 Whole Health Heroes will be featured in a special section of Crain’s New York Business on Sept. 16, and celebrated at a luncheon on Oct. 17 in New York City at Manhattan Penthouse. Frederick P. Gabriel, Publisher and Executive Editor of Crain’s New York Business and DeStefano will participate in the event.
