What if soap icon Susan Lucci was our next Golden Bachelorette? According to Lucci, that might have been the direction that new show could have gone in. “I believe that they contacted my publicist and it wasn’t for me,” Lucci told People, despite being a new fan of the franchise. “I really enjoyed watching The Golden Bachelor. This is a new addiction for me.” But it’s not certain that Lucci was referring to an offer to star as the titular Bachelorette, with Entertainment Weekly now reporting that the actress was not in the running for the gig after all. While you can’t go wrong putting Lucci on your television show, it would have been weird for the series to go the celebrity route before it’s even begun — particularly given the success of its normal-person-filled predecessor, The Golden Bachelor. That season also gave producers an extensive roster of potential Bachelorettes to pull from, including their ultimate pick Joan Vassos. Maybe that call Lucci was referring to was to appear during the season as a celebrity guest, like when Billy Eichner went on The Bachelor and presciently called Colton Underwood gay, or when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar judged how well Rachel Lindsay’s men played basketball. Perhaps there’s a soap opera themed group date on the horizon? So while Lucci won’t be handing out roses this season, maybe if she’s up for the gig 19 times she’ll finally take it.
