Carrie’s Hat Is Actually the Best Thing About This Outfit

A bat signal in the form of a floppy hat has awoken me from my And Just Like That … slumber. On Monday, Sarah Jessica Parker posted a photo to her Instagram in a very “reboot Carrie” ensemble: A gargantuan gingham hat, a Neapolitan-ice-cream-inspired vintage dress, and a tote bag carrying the book The Demon of Unrest — a work of nonfiction about the Civil War (ah, yes, famously Carrie’s favorite subject). On her feet, she tagged a pair of “cushioning” Dr. Scholl’s sandals (the old Carrie would never).

As we’ve come to expect from Carrie’s AJLT looks, the outfit is altogether unhinged. But the hat, designed by Maryam Keyhani and reminiscent of a Strawberry Shortcake doll I once begged my parents for, has received most of the internet’s ire, with reactions ranging from “WTF” to equating the headwear to the “muffin man on steroids.”

But the more I’ve sat with this look, the more I’ve come to the conclusion that the hat is not the issue. In fact, dare I say I like the hat? I’ll invoke Carrie’s very own, very famous line: “You just don’t get it.” Keyhani’s accessories (a similar piece seems to retail for around $420) are playful, like an extension of the paintings she creates. All of the artist’s work, which includes clown-nose hats that look more like dainty cakes and necklaces inscribed with the words Remember to Play, toes the line between saccharine and absurd. The real issue here is unbalanced styling that makes this playful hat look so out of place. There is whimsy in that headpiece while the rest of the outfit is simply zany. Keyhani’s hat is serving Surrealism, but Carrie is giving farmers’ market at best.

The Carrie we once knew had a polished playfulness to nearly every outfit Patricia Field dressed her in. The new Carrie seems to oscillate between pristine and pattern burnout. Is she throwing caution to the wind and finally learning to let go? Is she secretly leaning in to being free from her “mistake” of a marriage? Has Carrie, a famously stubborn and unyielding woman, simply … changed? Season three of And Just Like That … returns in 2025. Until then, I’ll be stuck trying to parse the @andjustlikethatcostumes page.
