Gary investigating multiple shootings

Gary Police are investigating multiple shooting incidents, including a fight on Thursday where three people were shot.

In the first shooting, Gary Police responded to the 2200 block of Carolina Street for a report of multiple groups of people fighting and shots fired, according to a news release from spokesman Cmdr. Sam Roberts. When officers arrived around 10:30 p.m. Feb. 1, they found multiple gun casings in the area and located a shooting victim, a 20-year-old Gary man, sitting in the grass, the release stated. The victim told the police that he was shot as he was watching several women fighting when he heard shots and felt pain in his right thigh. The victim told the officers that he did not see who shot the gun, police said.

Officers found a second shooting victim at a nearby residence. The 21-year-old Gary woman was shot in the left thigh, the release stated. She told the officers that she was involved in the fight, but she did not know who shot her and would not cooperate with police.

Officers were dispatched to Northlake Methodist Hospital for a third victim of the shooting incident, police said. The 24-year-old Gary woman told the police that she was shot while sitting in a friend’s car watching a group of women fighting. The 24-year-old woman was taken to the hospital by her friend after suffering a gunshot wound to the left thigh, police said. She was transported to another hospital for further treatment. The victim stated that she heard multiple gunshots, but she does not know who shot her, police said.

A Ford Fiesta was also damaged during the shooting.

Also from Feb. 1, Gary Police responded to a report of a 40-year-old Gary woman shot around 7 p.m. in the 4600 block of Delaware St., the release stated. The Glen Park area woman told police that she was entering her home when she heard two gunshots and immediately felt pain in her right leg. She entered her home and was taken to Southlake Methodist Hospital by a relative, police said, but she does not know who shot her.

On Jan. 31, Gary Police responded to the hospital to interview a 30-year-old Gary man, who was shot around 1:30 p.m. in the hallway of an apartment building in the 500 block of South Vermillion, the release stated. The victim told police he was in the hallway and saw a man he didn’t know, when he heard a gunshot, felt pain, and noticed blood. He then ran to an apartment, where a friend called medics, police said. The victim was taken to the hospital. The victim told police that he didn’t know the gunman, but when officers spoke with witnesses, they were told that two men were heard arguing prior to shots being fired.

These cases are being investigated by Sgt. William Fazekas, who can be contacted at (219) 881-1210.
